BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
The Department of Political Science at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as postdoctoral researcher to join a research team studying what politicians believe about voter behavior directed by Associate Professor Martin Bisgaard.
The position will focus on
(1) developing a theoretical framework for understanding politicians’ intuitive theories of voter behavior
(2) designing empirical strategies to explore what politicians believe about voters’ electoral reactions and well these beliefs match the actual behavior of voters,
(3) and on turning this research into high-impact publications that advance our understanding of democratic politics.
The position also includes teaching the equivalent to one course per year.
The starting date is 1 September 2023 but can be flexible subject to mutual agreement.
The Research Project
The position is part of the project “What Politicians Believe About Voter Behavior” led by Associate Professor Martin Bisgaard. The project is funded by a grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
Broadly speaking, the project focuses on understanding the electoral constraints that politicians think they face when making decisions. While prior research abounds with examples of how public policies are designed in anticipation of how voters will respond to them, little systematic work studies how politicians think about the potential for electoral reward or punishment – and how well anticipated reactions match against real-world electoral behavior.
Theoretically, the project aims to develop and test theoretical models that help us understand how politicians anticipate voter reactions to public policies with varying distribution of costs and benefits. Methodologically, the project plans to use a rigorous approach to measurement, including qualitative interviews, and to employ causally credible research designs, including experimental and observational studies. Empirically, the project will generate systematic evidence on what politicians believe about voter reactions to varying policy consequences, across diverse policy areas and among different groups of voters.
The Job
The postdoctoral researcher will be employed as part of a research group and is expected to engage in collaborative research with Associate Professor Martin Bisgaard, as well as the other members of the research team.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to take a leading role in developing, designing, coordinating research, and publishing research in high-impact journals. Moreover, as part of the research group, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to provide support for project-related organizational and administrative tasks.
The successful applicant will be part of a cutting-edge research project and a vibrant, supportive research team with an informal atmosphere. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentoring, as well as developing an independent research agenda within the context of the project. Focus is also placed on how the candidate can make use of the postdoctoral position to develop their own career.
The project offers funding for an international research stay, conferences, additional training, and good opportunities for developing a strong academic network.
In addition to the outlined research tasks, the position entails teaching the equivalent of one course per year.
Your qualifications
The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position should hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in Political Science, Economics, Sociology, or a related field, with a focus on political elites or voter behavior. The candidate should be interested in understanding how politicians think about voter behavior and be committed to collaborative research. Excellent command of spoken and written English is required. The successful candidate should have experience in designing survey instruments, collecting survey data, programming in languages such as R, and in using research designs for causal inference. Candidates with experience in using text as data or a qualitative approach to study political elites are also encouraged to apply.
As part of your application, you should attach a CV, proof of PhD degree (or the near completion of a PhD degree), and your best publication (could be an unpublished chapter of your dissertation, a working paper, or a published article). In addition to this, you should provide a short research proposal (1-2 pages) that outline potential avenues for research related to the project. The proposal should be relatively concrete, specifying research design and data collection.
